WCPTA Resolution in support of Wake County School Bond Referendum

9/25/2018

Support for the November 6, 2018
Wake County School Bond Referendum
A Resolution of the Wake County PTA Council Board
WHEREAS, the mission of the PTA is:

  1. To support and speak on behalf of children and youth in the schools, in the community, and before governmental and other organizations that make decisions affecting children;
  2. To assist parents in developing the skills they need to raise and protect their children;
  3. To encourage parent and public involvement in the public schools of this nation;

WHEREAS, Wake County Public School System has a current enrollment of approximately 160,000 students and yearly growth projections of 2 percent or more will result in severely overcrowded schools in some areas of the county;

WHEREAS, the ongoing construction of new schools and the renovation and updating of existing inadequate facilities are essential to provide safe and adequate learning environments for all children; and providing housing to our students is a statutory and constitutional obligation;

WHEREAS, the continued academic excellence of Wake County’s public schools is essential to Wake County’s economic well-being, as well, as maintaining the status of being one of the best places to live in the country;
WHEREAS, the Wake County Board of Education and the Wake County Board of Commissioners have mutually agreed upon a rolling seven-year building program, which is estimated to cost $2.4 billion. The next two-year phase of renovation and construction will require a $548 million bond package to be approved by the voters this year;
WHEREAS, voter-approved bonds carry the lower interest rates, and when coupled with Wake County’s AAA bond rating, general obligation bonds are the most cost-effective way to pay for school construction and renovation.
WHEREAS, the Wake County PTA Council Board supports the continued efforts of the Wake County Board of Commissioners, the Wake County Board of Education, and all citizens of Wake County to provide our most valuable asset – our youth – with the best educational opportunities possible.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Wake County PTA Council Board hereby expresses its active promotion and strong support for the passage of the November 6, 2018 Wake County School Bond Referendum.
Adopted this 19th day of September 2018.
Kassandra L. Watson,
Wake County PTA Council President (2018-19)
