Adams Elementary PTA - Leading the way in Sustainability Initiatives!!!!

6/24/2016

The Adams Elementary School PTA is taking the lead in Wake County on introducing composting and other sustainability issues in the school’s lunch room. The PTA enlisted the expertise of Every Tray Counts (ETC), a non-profit with experience in helping schools roll out school lunch room composting and sustainability programs.

ETC received a grant from Wake County Solid Waste for this program. The program's purpose is to provide proof of concept that food waste diversion and the use of compost-able products is beneficial to the Wake County Public School System (WCPSS).
Every Tray Counts and the Adams PTA, (working collaboratively with WCPSS Child Nutrition Services,

Adams Elementary school administration, staff, and parents) will demonstrate results that include savings in trash volume and weight going to the landfill, reduced waste diversion costs, expanded opportunities in educational curriculum, and student leadership opportunities around waste diversion, composting, and sustainability. The pilot at Adams Elementary School will provide the data set to show what the impact of reducing waste could mean for the entire school district.

Beginning May 23, 2016 and going for one month, through June 20, the partnership introduced composting into the Adams lunchroom and gathering data while educating the students, staff and teacher how to properly place unwanted items into either compost, recycling or landfill/trash.

The grant provides funding for the composting program to continue for approximately one year following month-long pilot. Based on the data collected, the partnership will explore how to make the project self-sustaining in the long term.

Well done Adams - and thanks for sharing!!!

Support for WCPSS Budget Request (June 2016)

6/6/2016

Dear Wake County Commissioners,

A tremendous thank you for your past support and hard work supporting and advocating for our public schools.

Yesterday the Wake PTA Council Board of Directors adopted a resolution supporting full funding of the WCPSS Board of Education Budget Request.  The strength of our public schools is essential to the vitality of our county as a whole.

We believe that the BOE budget request helps us make progress towards closing loss of funding that has occurred since the recession.  While most additional funding will go to support growth and legislative impact, modest funding will support program enhancement and continuity necessary to make our schools competitive and effective.

We encourage all of you to continue your strong support for our schools by meeting the WCPSS BOE budget request.  Please find attached a copy of our resolution.  Members of our board will also attend the hearings on Monday to speak to our support for full funding.

We thank you all for your advocacy and for your support of all of our students, teachers, and schools.

Best,

Hardin Engelhardt
